We have become a sedentary society. Instead of walking short distances, we drive. We phone our friends, even when they live next door. We spend our leisure time watching television or playing games on the computer instead of being physically active. And our health is paying a price. According to the American Heart Association, spending excessive amounts of time sitting is an independent risk factor for heart disease and stroke.
