If youre older than 50 and have any cardiovascular disease (CVD), you have a higher risk of hip fracture than those who dont have CVD. The risk is even higher among heart failure and stroke patients, according to a study published in the Oct. 21 issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association. Researchers studied the medical records of the worlds largest twin registry, which included 31,936 Swedish twins born between 1914 and 1944, and found that those with heart failure or who had experienced a stroke were five times more likely to suffer a hip fracture than participants with no prior CVD diagnosis. Researchers suggest that genetic factors may play a significant role, as there are certain genes involved in cellular mechanisms shared by bones and the vascular system.
