Adults with kidney disease are much more likely to suffer from sudden cardiac death (SCD) than those with normally functioning kidneys, according to study reported online April 7 by the journal Hypertension. "Sudden cardiac death is the immediate cessation of cardiac activity without resuscitation," says Richard Fatica, MD, associate staff member in the Glickman Urological & Kidney Institute at Cleveland Clinic. "Most often, underlying cardiac or coronary disease, or risk factors associated with these, are also risks for SCD. The link between renal disease, especially chronic kidney disease (CKD), and coronary heart disease is strong."
