SCAD as the Cause of Heart Attack in Young Women

Full recovery is possible, but steps should be taken to protect the heart from that point on.

© dragana991 | Getty Images Heart attacks in young adults, particularly women, are rarely caused by atherosclerosis, but more often by spontaneous coronary artery dissection, or a split in the wall of a coronary artery. One-fifth of cases occur during late pregnancy or soon after giving birth.

Atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD), the disease that cause the vast majority of heart attacks, is a disease of aging. Most men with ASCVD experience their first heart attack in their mid-60s; women in their early 70s.
