Coronary artery disease (CAD), the disease that leads to heart attack, used to be considered a manís disease. Thatís because estrogen helps prevent CAD, making heart attacks unusual in younger women. But after menopause, when estrogen levels decline, the risk of CAD quickly accelerates. By age 70, a womanís risk of heart attack is equal to a manís.
