Salt Substitutes May Be Unhealthy for Your Heart

When they are high in potassium, they may cause dangerous arrhythmias and even cardiac arrest in some people.

Lowering salt intake is important for people with high blood pressure, heart failure and other conditions that cause them to retain water. Many of these people satisfy their craving for a salty taste by using a salt substituteósometimes called "light salt." However, they donít realize that the main ingredient may be more dangerous than salt itself. "Salt substitutes are not an ideal alternative for everyone. From a dietitianís perspective, itís better to get rid of the salt shaker entirely than to use a salt substitute," says Cleveland Clinic registered dietitian Melissa Ohlson, MS, RD, LD.
