Chances are good you know someone who has had a stroke. That’s because 795,000 strokes occur in the U.S. every year. More than 9.4 million people ages 20 and older in the U.S. report having had a stroke. The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association projects that in 2030—only five years from now—the number of stroke survivors ages 18 and older will grow by an additional 3.9 million. Although stroke is the fifth most common cause of death in this country, it is better known as a major cause of serious disability: Few people survive a stroke without some degree of impairment.
