As many as one in every 20 Americans has a vascular condition called chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), which slows the flow of blood from the legs back up to the heart. CVI is uncomfortable and can be unsightly, but is unlikely to cause a heart attack. Nevertheless, individuals with CVI may be at increased risk for heart disease.
