Whether you receive a drug-eluting stent (DES) or a bare-metal stent (BMS), youre going to be prescribed medications to help prevent a blood clot from forming on the stent. This condition is called stent thrombosis, and it can be life threatening, because a clot can stop blood flow and lead to a heart attack. The medication regimen designed to block stent thrombosis is called dual antiplatelet therapy (DAPT), and it consists of aspirin and an antiplatelet drug such as clopidogrel (Plavix), prasugrel (Effient), or ticagrelor (Brilinta).
