Having a large waist circumference, insulin resistance or elevated blood sugar, high blood pressure, high triglyceride level or low level of “good” HDL cholesterol increases the risk of developing coronary artery disease. Having at least three of these symptoms—a condition known as metabolic syndrome—increases the risk exponentially.
