Options Sought After Drug Study

Patients who take rosiglitazone might consider pioglitazone instead.

Diabetes patients concerned about taking rosiglitazone (Avandia) after a recent study linked the drug to a higher risk of heart attacks may have a safer option, the studys author says. Pioglitazone (Actos) is from the same class of thiazolidenediones as rosiglitazone. Thiazolidenediones make insulin work more effectively and lower blood sugar levels in patients with Type 2 diabetes.
