Exercise May Prevent Appetite from Sabotaging Weight Loss

GLP-1 receptor agonists (RA) help individuals lose excess weight and keep it off by mimicking the appetite-suppressing hormone GLP-1. A recent study suggests exercise may have the same effect. The study involved 195 adults with obesity who lost about 29 pounds after following an 800-calorie diet for eight weeks. The participants were then randomized to one year of usual activity, the GLP-1 RA liraglutide (Saxenda®) plus usual activity, moderate-to-vigorous exercise or a combination. The endpoint was change in GLP-1 response to a liquid meal test given before the weight loss occurred and after the 52-week study.
