Coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) is the treatment of choice when deposits of fatty atherosclerosis (plaques) are found throughout the coronary arteries or threaten to block blood flow through the left anterior descending (LAD) artery. In these situations, rerouting blood around the diseased native arteries using both the left and right arteries that run inside the chest wall (bilateral internal thoracic arteries, or BITA), plus additional veins or arteries as needed, offers the greatest protection against future heart attack and cardiac death.
