Ask the Doctors: 12/04
Youve reported that statins may cause damage to the muscles, liver, and kidneys. Is the problem temporary or permanent? You also say that a normal CK test indicates no muscle damage. Does that mean that an abnormally high CK level definitely reveals damage? Statins are very safe, but as you point out, like all medications, they can cause serious side effects. Rarely, statin patients do suffer damage to muscles, liver, and kidneys. Most of the time, especially if discovered early on, the damage is reversible by stopping the statin temporarily or permanently. Sometimes, just reducing the dose or switching to another statin solves the problem. Subscribers: Non-subscribers: |
