Eating to Prevent Diabetes

One key to holding off diabetes is to lower your consumption of simple carbohydrates—sugary foods—and eat more complex carbohydrates and fiber—whole grains, legumes, nuts, seeds and green vegetables. You will lose weight and feel great. Add healthy sources of protein, and your carbs will digest more slowly, keeping blood sugar levels steady.

Eating to Prevent Diabetes

If you've been diagnosed with prediabetes, eating certain foods and avoiding others can help lower your blood sugar.

The good news is that diabetes is not inevitable. The Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) found that making lifestyle changes can prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes. People who lost 7% to 10% of their body weight and exercised a minimum of 150 minutes per week decreased their risk of developing diabetes by 58% to 90%.
