If niacin needs to be taken as a medication, it is best to use prescription niacin that is taken once a day and released more slowly, therefore resulting in much less flushing. Taking this compound right before going to bed can further decrease awareness of flushing (since you will be asleep). The substance that causes flushing due to niacin has been identified, and an inhibitor has been developed to quell it. This flushing inhibitor significantly reduces the frequency of flushing and it has been evaluated in clinical studies. If approved by the FDA, it may be another option for patients bothered by flushing from niacin.
