Obesity is a known risk factor for heart disease, but where your body stores fat helps determine the extent of this risk. People with an apple shape—those who store fat in their waist and abdomen—are more likely to develop metabolic syndrome, type 2 diabetes and heart disease than those with heavy hips and a near-normal waist size (pear shape).
