Heart catheterization—more often called cardiac catheterization—is the gold standard test for identifying the presence and extent of fatty plaques restricting blood flow through the coronary arteries. More than 1 million cardiac catheterizations are performed every year in the U.S. The procedure has an excellent safety record, but it is not unusual for individuals undergoing their first heart catheterization to wonder about the seriousness of the test.
