Q. Do women who take GLP-1 drugs lose more weight than men?
A
There is a growing body of preclinical and clinical literature explaining how GLP-1 agents (dulaglutide, exendin, liraglutide, semaglutide and tirzepatide) work and illustrating potential differences in how males and females respond to these agents. The explanations are too detailed to discuss in this limited space. However, estrogen appears to play a key role. In particular the interaction between GLP-1 and estrogen produces better blood sugar control and greater weight loss in premenopausal women compared with postmenopausal women.
