Critics of ephedra, a popular herbal preparation, cried “Foul!” last February when Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler, 23, collapsed and died of heatstroke in Florida after taking the weight-loss product. Broward County Florida Medical Examiner Joshua A. Perper, M.D., says “significant amounts” of ephedra contributed to Bechler’s death, along with other risk factors including obesity, borderline high blood pressure and a slightly enlarged heart.
