The Case against a Popular Herb

Ephedra offers few proven benefits but many adverse effects.

Critics of ephedra, a popular herbal preparation, cried “Foul!” last February when Baltimore Orioles pitcher Steve Bechler, 23, collapsed and died of heatstroke in Florida after taking the weight-loss product. Cleveland Clinic physicians were among those who joined in condemning the “food supplement” — and threat to cardiovascular health — derived from the plant ma huang.


Vessels constrict, heat builds

Broward County Florida Medical Examiner Joshua A. Perper, M.D., says “significant amounts” of ephedra contributed to Bechler’s death, along with other risk factors including obesity, borderline high blood pressure and a slightly enlarged heart.
