The Dream of a Do-It-All “Polypill”

The reality: Patients will probably keep taking separate heart drugs.

What’s wrong with this idea? Everyone over the age of 55 — or anyone with vascular disease — would take a single pill daily combining three types of cardiovascular medication and folic acid to prevent heart disease and stroke. This “Polypill” would prevent 88 percent of heart disease cases, and 80 percent of strokes, according to British researchers who are seeking to patent their recently proposed idea. They say about a third of everyone who took the pill daily from age 55 on would gain about 11 extra years of life. …
