The Eye: A Window to the Heart How an ophthalmologist’s exam may head off serious risks.
A gray, tear-shaped translucent cloud partially blocked vision in the left eye of a 63-year-old New York man well call Syd. At first, he passed it off to fatigue or too much time in front of a computer screen. When the cloud began to feel like a permanent patch over his field of vision, he went to an ophthalmologist. After eye drops had widened Syds pupils, the physician used a piercingly bright light to illuminate Syds retina, the transparent surface at the back of the eye where images are projected.
