I had angioplasty and have one stent. My cardiologist says that I don’t need to take clopidogrel (Plavix) plus aspirin. He says one or the other is okay. I am taking clopidogrel, but notice that advertising for the medication suggests coupling it with aspirin. What’s your opinion?

Aspirin and clopidogrel are both antiplatelet agents that help keep the blood from clotting. In the right patient, aspirin reduces the risk of death and heart attack. A large study showed that clopidogrel was superior to aspirin in reducing the risk of death, heart attack or stroke in patients with established cardiovascular disease. But clopidogrel is more expensive than aspirin, and requires a prescription.…
