Antibiotics vs. Heart Disease Risk

How and why you should protect yourself against infection.

A theory that infection-fighting antibiotic drugs can protect your heart “hasn’t panned out” in recent research, according to a Cleveland Clinic cardiologist. But flu shots to prevent viral infections are still a great idea, says Christopher Bajzer, M.D., associate director of vascular intervention at The Cleveland Clinic. October is the perfect time to get a flu shot if you haven’t already.

A contradiction? No. It’s true that two recent large studies failed to show any heart-protective benefits from antibiotics. But researchers remain pretty sure that the link between infective agents and heart disease is strong enough that you should do all you can to keep bugs at bay. …
