A theory that infection-fighting antibiotic drugs can protect your heart hasnt panned out in recent research, according to a Cleveland Clinic cardiologist. But flu shots to prevent viral infections are still a great idea, says Christopher Bajzer, M.D., associate director of vascular intervention at The Cleveland Clinic. October is the perfect time to get a flu shot if you havent already. A contradiction? No. Its true that two recent large studies failed to show any heart-protective benefits from antibiotics.
