Improving the flow in neck arteries helps fight a killer.

The two parallel arteries running up the sides of the neck to the brain are like highways compared with the much smaller roadways carrying blood to the heart muscle. So you might assume that the major neck vessels, called carotid arteries, aren’t vulnerable to the dangerous plaque that clogs heart arteries like roadside debris.

You’d be wrong.

Large as they are, the carotid arteries are at risk of serious narrowing. The deposits on the vessel wall are potential accidents waiting to happen. Strokes, or “brain attacks,” afflict more than 700,000 Americans a year, kill about 150,000, and disable thousands more, physically and mentally. …
