Patients with heart disease bear a double burden when they face non-cardiac surgery like the replacement of a hip — anxiety about the operation itself, and concern about its effect on their cardiovascular health. New guidelines for doctors should help lessen the burdens.

With these recently revised guidelines, released jointly by the American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology in January, cardiologists can work better with surgical teams and patients to ensure maximum safety before, during and after an operation. …
