High blood pressure medications work well, but many people are unaware they need them.

Hypertension-related deaths are on the rise — but public awareness of the threat remains dismally low even though medications to fight high blood pressure are highly safe and effective.

The number of hypertension-related deaths increased 46 percent between 1989 and 1999, according to the American Heart Association (AHA).
