Migraineurs (people who suffer migraines), with or without aura, are at an increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), according to a large study published in the Feb. 10 issue of Neurology. Migraineurs are also more likely to have diabetes, hypertension, and high cholesterol than those without migraines, the study found. Researchers said they hoped that physicians with patients who are migraineurs will be especially mindful of the association and plan treatments that target the migraine headaches as well as the cardiovascular complications that appear likely to accompany the condition. Researchers added that the absolute risk of CVD is still small, but that lifestyle choices and an awareness of elevated risk should be heeded by migraineurs.
